I actually liked that ME2 stripped away some of the so-called "RPG mechanics." It is not immersive to me to be constantly determining what exact weapons the rest of my party wields, or to be choosing what they are wearing-and constantly switching these things around as I plunder nearby crates as I ceaselessly find better equipment, despite the context of doing so not making much sense. The skeleton boss fight is still really stupid and anticlimactic, though. Maybe Bioware could have handled implementation better, but I think in-game justifications for greater human activity in ME2 are mostly sensible and effective. Humanity is relatively more powerful in ME2 because the Turians and Asari squandered large portions of their respective fleets taking down Sovereign at the end of ME1. More established galactic species spend a decent chunk of the game complaining that humans are getting special treatment because they're warlike and adaptable and generally pretty good at killing things. Not to get in a prolonged argument about no-longer-relevant Mass Effect lore, but in ME1 humanity is set up as being unreasonably competent for a bunch of galactic upstarts and even capable of going toe-to-toe with the Turians in circumstances of limited terrestrial engagement (the Turians easily outclass them in terms of fleet power and size).
